A wide range of hotels, spas, restaurants, art galleries, and theatres are conveniently located in Kamloops downtown district. Historically the major industries in Kamloops have been agriculture, forestry and mining, however moving forward agri-food production, high tech manufacturing, non-metallic mineral production and tourism are all playing an important role in the city’s economy.

 Practice Details:

  • Hospitalists play a valuable role on the core service team at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH). While working in close collaboration with the General Internal Medicine Service, the primary responsibility of the Hospitalist is to provide General Medical Care for adult medical and surgical patients at this busy referral center, as many of our patients are geriatric and have multiple co-morbidities. This role may include being the only doctor involved, most responsible physician (MRP), or to provide medical care for Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Trauma and/or other co-managed patients. This is a very diverse and rewarding position as one always works in a highly-valued, positive environment.

With the increased importance of RIH as a medical undergraduate site, this role will also include the opportunity to teach clerks in the Medical Service. This position does not include any Obstetrics/Gynaecology or Pediatrics coverage.

Commonly dealing with patients and families in high stress situations, this job requires superior clinical and communication skills, along with exceptional bedside manner and people management abilities. Legible handwriting is also a must. Our team is very proficient with the matrix of community resources available, discharge planning processes, and the many individuals involved with all aspects of patient care planning.

This professional group has an excellent reputation in the medical community and is noted by their specialist colleagues to function much like their Internist peers. Group dynamics are strong and congenial in nature, and are supported by the culture of ‘I have got your back'. This culture is extended to the RIH Medical Staff who are very cooperative, professional, and focused on quality improvement. Relationships with the Interior Health Administration are also very cooperative and professional.

RIH Hospitalists are also very active in many aspects of the medical community outside of regular responsibilities. This group, originally started in April 2008, has emerged as an important player in the Quality Assurance (QA) Process at RIH. Other initiatives in which Hospitalists are involved include Infection Control, Antibiotic Stewardship, and System Improvement. Hospitalists are mandated to care for orphaned inpatients and work with the community of Family Practitioners around discharge planning and communications.

On-site hours are generally 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. based on an average of 18-22 inpatients per day. Schedule is seven days on, seven day off, and is flexible as necessary. Participation in after-hours call is mandatory, but frequency of call varies by individual physician interest and energy and is negotiable- some take more call than others. Intensity of call workload varies, but is generally quiet in the evenings. It is quite uncommon to come back in to manage unstable patients after hours; most pages can be dealt with by phone. This group benefits from strong relationships with Emergency Department Physicians who are willing to write covering orders on patients admitted to a Hospitalist overnight, as such reviewing and finalization of admission orders and documentation is done in the morning.
