Quality Improvement is at the core of hospital medicine.
increased focus on quality improvement and patient safety that resulted from the Institute of Medicine's publications (To Err is Human: Building A Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century) conincided with the birth and subsequent rapid growth of hospital medicine. Hospitalists are in a unique position to design and lead quality improvement projects in their hospitals.The Canadian Society of Hospital Medicine considers quality improvement and patient safety as an intergal part of the hospitalist movement in Canada. Through its Quality and Patient Safety Committee, it provides guidance for hospitalists involved in quality improvement work, and provides a venue for exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences.
