Hospitalist

Calling Nova Scotia home means ocean views, active living and welcoming communities. Specifically, the Truro is the part of the province where people come to play on the shores of the Northumberland Strait that offer the best beach-combing and warmest swimming in the Province. This area is also home to a large fresh seafood industry and rolling wine country, and the quaint town of Tatamagouche. Truro is home to industry and a modern town located near the famous Bay of Fundy and a short drive to the Five Islands Provincial Park with beautiful shores of red clay and fossil finds. The zone is also home to Ski Wentworth, one of the ski resorts in the province and Fox Harb’r the legendary golf course enjoyed by celebrities from all over. Quick access to New Brunswick and PEI make this location a small town charm with regional access to the larger centres of Halifax and Moncton in 1 hour and less than 2 hours, respectively.

The Colchester East Hants Health Centre (CEHHC), set in Truro, is seeking full and part time hospitalists to join our program. Our hospitalist program currently covers 45-70 hospital inpatients split evenly among three hospitalist lines/physicians. Coverage is divided into seven day stretches, with full time coverage being seven days “on” followed by seven days “off”, with an understanding that physicians can have two “on” weeks off per year for vacation. Part time coverage of as few as five weeks per year is currently being considered as well. Remuneration is $1300/day with $300-$400/night of call plus fee for service for any patients seen after hours while on call. Call is two nights per work week, and covers the hours of 5pm to 8am the following morning. Hospitalists on call cover the hospitalist patient roster, plus roughly 18-30 family practice patients covered during the day by a family practice call group, and 5-10 stable patients waiting for long term care covered during the day by our Care by Design physicians (i.e. a local group of physicians who cover nursing homes).

We have a young hospitalist program at the CEHHC and are looking for engaged and collaborative physicians who can help flesh out and develop our program along with our current members. Some current areas of interest are developing morbidly and mortality rounds, generating an online repository of educational/reference materials specific to hospital medicine, and regular peer-led education sessions. More ideas are welcome.

The setting for our program is the CEHHC, which is a friendly and collegial workplace where everyone actually does know your name. The hospital is the newest in the province, having been opened in 2012. In addition to several outpatient clinic spaces, the hospital houses a full time Emergency Room, 7 bed ICU, four Internists, four General Surgeons, three Urologists, three Paediatricians, and five Obs/Gynes. The building is featured in the first part of this short video: https://vimeo.com/86919145.

Interested candidates must be fully licensed or be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, with training in either Family Medicine or Internal Medicine. Internists must hold Fellow certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and Family Physicians must hold certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP).
