At the 2014 CSHM annual meeting last week, the QI committee presented the Choosing Wisely Canada campaign. This campaign encourages physicians and patients to discuss unnecessary testing and procedures that may be costly and lead to harm. This work carries high degree of significance in the move toward appropriate resource utilization in the landscape of limited healthcare resources.
As hospitalists, we are positioned to lead these efforts.
To this end, the CSHM QI committee will be spearheading the creation of a list of 5 recommendations of tests and procedures that are overused. These must be: 1) relevant to hospitalist work, 2) occur frequently, and 3) have sound evidence for its misuse/overuse. Attached is a list from CSIM for reference. The Choosing Wisely (US and Canada) websites are also useful: http://www.choosingwiselycanada.org; www.choosingwisely.org
If you are interested in participating in our list creation or have a recommendation you would like to nominate for consideration by the QI committee, please email them to me by FRIDAY OCTOBER 3.
