Practice Resources

Managing a Hospital Medicine practice presents unique challenges to Canadian physician leaders.  Not only does this task involve the traditional challenges of leading physicians, the integral role that the Hospitalist program plays in the Hospital demands significant attention to hospital systems, quality and efficiency.

The Society of Hospital Medicine is an important resource for management tools that are highly relevant to Canadian Hospitalists.  This page will provide selected resources from this source.  There is a great deal of additional material on the SHM Practice Resource page.

If you have a practice management tool that you would like to post here please send it with a brief explanation to [email protected].

Measuring Hospitalist Performance - SHM White Paper

Both as a specialty and as individual physicians, Hospitalists strive to demonstrate value through the provision of high quality, efficient, patient centered care.  To do so successfully demands a focused and rigorous approach to performance monitoring and improvement.  The 2006 paper, "Measuring Hospitalist Performance" produced by the SHM's Benchmark Committee covers methodology for measuring and reporting Hospitalist program performance.  It covers what aspects of performance to monitor, how and where to go with this information and what should be done with the information once it is collected.

Hospitalists Add Value

Providing high-quality, cost effective care to acutely ill patients in the hospital setting is becoming more complex.  Published in 2005 as a special supplement in The Hospitalist , "How Hospitalists Add Value" is an excellent paper outlining the significant advantages of the Hospitalist model of care.  As traditional physician compensation models significantly under value hospital based work, most Hospitalist programs require supplemental funding from their institution.  This paper outlines the significant Value that Hospitalist programs contribute to Hospitals, Patients and the Medical community.
